Guided by our 100-Year Strategy and built to deliver long-term resilience, our Data Insights initiative is reshaping how we make decisions.
In a world of increasing climate variability, rising expectations and growing pressure to do more with less, this work is helping CPWL shift from experience-based decisions to evidence-based leadership, strengthening operational, environmental and business resilience and, in doing so, reshaping how we deliver value to shareholders and care for the environment.

Our Board recognised early that good decisions rely on good data. That is why we have made a long-term investment in building a smarter, more connected data system, one that underpins everything from improving water delivery and reducing downtime to meeting environmental expectations.
This is not a simple technology upgrade. It represents a deliberate mindset shift, placing data at the centre of how we operate.
Fixing the Pain Points.
In the past, pulling together water usage and compliance reports could take up to three months each year. Valuable time was spent searching across disconnected systems, spreadsheets and manual records. Working alongside Flock Consulting, we identified what mattered most and focused on solving it first. Manual processes were automated, key systems were integrated and reporting that once took weeks, now happens in hours.
Real-time Insights. Better Outcomes.
Our new platform brings together critical information, from irrigation flows to water-use efficiency, into simple visual dashboards. Staff can now see what’s happening across the scheme in almost real time. This means problems can be identified earlier, decisions are based on facts, and we’re able to prioritise the areas that need the most attention.
From Reactive to Proactive.
We are no longer waiting for things to go wrong. With better insights, we can predict where issues might occur and get ahead of them. For example, flow meters used to be serviced only after failure. Now we can identify those showing early signs of wear and intervene before problems arise. This approach saves time, reduces outages and strengthens overall system resilience.
Building Capability and Culture.
We know that lasting change does not come from software alone; it comes from people. That’s why this work has focused on upskilling our team, streamlining how we work and building a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement. The time we have saved has been reinvested into shareholder training, support and strategic planning.
Industry recognition.
The value of the Data Insights project has been recognised well beyond the scheme. The initiative has been presented to a wide range of audiences, highlighting its strategic importance and practical impact.
It has featured at national conferences, specialist data forums and sector workshops, including the New Zealand Digital Workplace Conference, the Christchurch Snowflake User Group and the Catchment Science Workshop. The project has also been shared with Environment Canterbury staff and Canterbury irrigation scheme CEOs, reinforcing its role in driving innovation and lifting data capability within the water sector.
The initiative continues to be showcased at national and international industry platforms, reflecting CPWL’s leadership in modern water resource management.
