Native Planting.

Project partner: Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust.

The landowners set out to increase native bird presence by establishing native vegetation to complement the mature exotic trees already surrounding their home. Their lifestyle block, formerly used as an equestrian ring now forms part of a wider network of native plantings helping to reconnect fragmented habitats across the Canterbury Plains. Together, these sites provide important food sources and shelter for birds and other wildlife moving through open landscapes.

Planting day.

With support from the Central Plains Water Environmental Management Fund (EMF) and guidance from Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust (TAK), the site was planted with 524 native seedlings to establish a tōtara–mātai podocarp forest. Although just over 1,000 square metres in size, the planting contributes meaningfully to the broader ecological corridor, often referred to as the “greenway,” strengthening habitat connectivity across the region.

The project included the development of a restoration plan, a volunteer planting day, and funding support for plants and protective guards. This collaborative approach enabled the landowners to expand native habitat while building on the ecological value already provided by the surrounding exotic trees.
