Native Planting.

The landowners aimed to increase native bird presence by establishing native vegetation to complement the mature exotic trees already surrounding their home. Their site now forms part of a wider network of native plantings helping to reconnect fragmented habitat across the Canterbury Plains — offering food sources and shelter for birds and other wildlife moving through open landscapes.

With a funding grant from the Environmental Management Fund (EMF) and led by Te Ara Kākāriki, native species were planted to restore habitat and attract native fauna. While just over 1,000 square metres, this small-scale restoration plays an important role in the broader ecological corridor, often referred to as the ‘greenway.’
