Waterway Protection.

Long Term Restoration.

The Kildara restoration project is a multi-year commitment to improve on-farm biodiversity, protect water quality, and create resilient wetland and waterway margins. Located in the Hororata catchment, the project spans two properties divided by the river and includes swales, springs, drains, and wet areas that have been progressively fenced off from stock due to their ecological sensitivity.

Supported by the Central Plains Water Environmental Management Fund (EMF), the current stage focuses on extending planting along these areas — including the recently acquired Cotons Roadblock — with a plan to regenerate native vegetation, stabilise banks, and reduce nutrient and sediment runoff during adverse weather events. The wet conditions in these zones make them ideal for retirement and restoration.

The project is being delivered by the landowners, with advice from the Central Plains Water Limited Environmental Team on planting and maintenance. Over the next five years, planting will be staged to support establishment, manage weeds, and build resilience in flood-prone areas. Some previously fenced zones will be adjusted to allow wider planting margins and better long-term outcomes.

By creating pockets of native habitat, the project also aims to build ecological corridors that link with neighbouring wetlands — supporting native birds, insects, and biodiversity in the wider landscape.

Impact.

Short Term.

  • Springs, drains, and swales fenced and protected from stock;
  • Site preparation and spraying completed ahead of staged planting;
  • Ongoing maintenance plan to support establishment, and
  • Shelter and buffers created along exposed areas prone to prevailing winds.

Long Term. 

  • Reduced sediment and nutrient runoff from flood-prone paddocks;
  • Enhanced biodiversity, with more native birds and insects returning;
  • Greater resilience during high-flow events and wet conditions, and
  • A connected corridor of native vegetation supporting wider catchment health.
