The Frizzell site in Kirwee is a native planting project designed to support a wider bird corridor and provide food sources for pollinators, including bees. Located alongside a water race, the planting replaces a long‑established exotic shelterbelt and forms part of a broader effort to encourage native planting across the local area.

With support from the Central Plains Water Environmental Management Fund (EMF), a total of 525 native plants were established as part of the project, contributing to a 1,200‑metre stretch where shelterbelts are gradually being replaced with native species. The landowner’s long‑term vision is to restore habitat while demonstrating the benefits of native planting to others in the community.

This site formed part of a community planting day held in 2018, involving the Darfield Cubs as part of the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust Greendot programme. Around 20 Cubs, supported by family members and friends, participated in planting over 500 native seedlings along the roadside. The planting contributed to the Cubs earning a badge and strengthened connections between local youth and environmental restoration.

Although planting occurred late in the season, favourable rainfall in the weeks prior supported successful establishment, followed by a sunny day for planting. The event concluded with a sausage sizzle, celebrating the collective effort and reinforcing the importance of community participation in restoring native habitats.
