To better understand water quality and support smarter catchment decisions, Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL) has invested in three real-time, in-stream surface water sensors.
Located at key points — Boggy Creek, Te Pā o Moki near Te Waihora, and the foothills — the sensors provide continuous data on pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, phosphorus, nitrates, E. coli and more.
Even when overland flow is minimal, surface-water monitoring plays a crucial role. It captures the cumulative effects of land use, groundwater discharge and runoff, insight into nutrient loading, sediment levels and overall ecosystem health.
The Sensors Enable:
- Catchment-scale modelling and planning.
- Targeted mitigation and evidenced-based policy submissions.
- Tracking progress against water quality standards.
They also provide accessible, local data to help farmers make more informed land management decisions — strengthening understanding of how land use affects freshwater health and supporting continuous improvement across the catchment.
