Community Project: Darfield High School Environment Group
Project Type: Cleaning Waterways
A true community school serving the area of Tawera / Melvern, boarded by the Rakaia River to the South and the Waimakariri River to the north.
Through Central Plains Water Environmental Fund (EMF) Darfield High School Environmental Group arranged for volunteers from the school community to spend a day, clearing rubbish from one squared kilometre of the Selwyn Riverbed. They then planted 200 native river plants Baumea Rubiginosa.
This project addresses the large issue of pollution and litter in the Selwyn River waterways, helping the river become less polluted and stabilising the river banks which will keep the water cleaner. With cleaner waterways, wildlife will be able to thrive, and locals will be encouraged to help make waters swimmable again.
Darfiield High School Environmental Group brings students into the community to further build on the schools foundations of giving back demonstrating the school values Kaitiakitanga (looking after our future), Kotahitanga (uniting our community), Manaakitanga (respect and care for others) and Rangatiratanga (becoming your best you).
